Earthquake recorded off northern Vancouver Island late Monday

An earthquake hit off the west coast of northern Vancouver Island late Monday night.

The 3.9 magnitude quake shook about 190 kilometres west of Port Hardy just before 11 p.m.

Earthquakes Canada said at the time a tsunami warning was not issued as none were expected.

According to the national earthquake service, the location of the earthquake is in a zone of the ocean that frequently sees earthquakes of magnitude 5 or higher.

The largest earthquake in the area was a 7-magnitude quake, recorded back in December 1918.
