Small plane crashes in South Surrey

A small plane crashed and caught fire in South Surrey Monday afternoon, in the area of Blackie Spit, Mounties have confirmed.

According to the RCMP, officers were called to the Crescent Beach area around 2:30 p.m.

Mounties say the pilot was the only person on board, adding they have been taken to the hospital with what are described as minor injuries. The RCMP notes there was “no other damage or injuries reported.”

Rich Bodnark with Surrey Fire Services says the single occupant suffered minor burns and was able to remove himself from the aircraft without assistance.

Debris was scattered across the area in the wake of the incident Monday, with police tape up around the crash site.

“As far as the plane itself, there’s really a bunch of pieces here and you’ve got emergency crews from police to fire,” described Darren Grieve from the CityNews 1130 air patrol.

“It looks like the airplane itself is in a few pieces here, looks like it hit pretty hard.”

Bodnark says his crews were able to reach the aircraft, suppress the fire and help clean up the area. He says the marsh the pilot landed in was good for the pilot’s safety, but difficult for his crews trying to access the area.

Just before 5 p.m. Monday, he told CityNews the area had been successfully cleaned up and while a few restrictions may still be in place, it should otherwise be fully accessible to the public.
