Vancouver’s New Year’s Eve fireworks event cancelled again

Vancouver’s New Year’s Eve celebration and fireworks won’t be going ahead this year according to the group in charge of the event.
The Vancouver New Year’s Eve Society says the decision wasn’t one made lightly and attributes the cancellation to a lack of sponsors and escalating costs surrounding the event.
“We understand that the absence of this cherished tradition can be frustrating … we appreciate the ongoing support and enthusiasm of Vancouver’s residents and visitors and look forward to the possibility of resuming the celebration in the coming years,” the society said in a release.

The fate of next year’s event has yet to be decided, but the society says it is working to secure funding to keep the New Year’s Eve celebration going in the future.
The event and fireworks show have yet to make a comeback since before the COVID-19 pandemic.
This cancellation comes just a week after Vancouver’s Santa Claus Parade was cancelled for similar reasons.
