Veterans’ Week begins Sunday, marked by Vancouver ceremonies

Sunday marks the beginning of Veterans’ Week in Canada, with a number of ceremonies taking place throughout the week in Vancouver.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says this year’s commemorative week marks the 75th anniversary of the United Nations peacekeeping efforts.

In a statement Sunday, Trudeau pointed towards investments made by the federal government to support Canada’s veterans, such as the Canadian Military, Veteran and Family Connected Campus Consortium, launched to help veterans find meaningful employment, and the $6 million Veteran and Family Well-Being Fund, established to help veterans find housing and employment.

“We know there is more work to be done to ensure that the needs of all veterans, including those from marginalized communities, are reflected in the support we provide,” Trudeau said. “To do this, we are developing policies, programs, and service delivery models that address the diverse needs of all Canada’s veterans.”

An additional $164 million was announced by the federal government this week to retain employees dedicated to delivering services to veterans, for another two years. This brings the government’s total investment into improving veteran services to a total of $321 million over five years.

Vancouver ceremonies

Days of note throughout the week include Indigenous Veterans Day on Wednesday and Rememberance Day on Saturday.

Ceremonies will be held at the Victory Square Cenotaph both days to commemorate veterans.

On Saturday, additional ceremonies will be held at UBC and the Japanese Canadian War Memorial in Vancouver.
