North Vancouver teen hurt by Halloween fireworks

Halloween fireworks sparked complaints across the Lower Mainland, and a Vancouver incident captured on camera shows some set off near pedestrians. Kate Walker has the story.

A teen was hurt when a firework blew up in his hand in North Vancouver on Halloween, first responders say.

BC Emergency Health Services says paramedics were called to the area of Edgemont Boulevard and W Queens Road just after 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 31.

According to BCEHS, the boy was taken to the hospital in critical but stable condition. The exact nature of the teen’s injuries are not clear.

RCMP Const. Mansoor Sahak tells CityNews “a group of youths setting off fireworks in the neighbourhood.”

“One of the youths was setting them off, it blew up in their hand,” he explained. “That night, we had tons of calls about teenagers, young people blowing up fireworks throughout North Vancouver — it wasn’t specific to a neighbourhood … That was just one of the calls that we attended where somebody actually sustained injuries to their hand.”

The sale, use, and possession of fireworks is prohibited in the City of North Vancouver, Sahak says, though he notes sale and use are allowed in the district with a valid permit.
