BC Ferries cancels evening sailings between Tsawwassen, Vancouver Island due to forecasted winds

In anticipation of high winds across the south coast, BC Ferries says it is cancelling some of its Friday evening sailings on two of its major routes.

The corporation says it is scrapping all sailings after 7 p.m. between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay in both directions, as well as all scheduled ferries after 8 p.m. between Tsawwassen and Duke Point, again in both directions.

The affected sailings are:

Tsawwassen (Vancouver) to Swartz Bay (Victoria)

  • 7 p.m.
  • 9 p.m.
  • 10 p.m.

Swartz Bay (Victoria) to Tsawwassen (Vancouver)

  • 7 p.m.
  • 8:15 p.m.
  • 9 p.m.

Tsawwassen (Vancouver) to Duke Point (Nanaimo)

  • 8:15 p.m.
  • 10:45 p.m.

Duke Point (Nanaimo) to Tsawwassen (Vancouver)

  • 8:15 p.m.
  • 10:45 p.m.

BC Ferries says it will monitor the weather system and share any updates as they come in.

CityNews Meteorologist Michael Kuss says a big fall storm is bringing winds that are expected to whip across most of the region Friday into Saturday.

Wind gusts could top 90 kilometres per hour in some areas of the province.

“We’re also going to get rain: heaviest rain is from 9 p.m. to about 5 a.m. around Metro Vancouver, and in the Fraser Valley, where there’s also a rainfall warning, that rain is going to linger into the early afternoon (Saturday),” said Kuss.
