Rogers reaches tentative agreement with Metro Van technicians

The union representing nearly 300 Rogers Communications technicians across Metro Vancouver says a tentative agreement was reached with the company Friday night.

After two weeks of striking, United Steelworkers Local 1944 representatives say its members, who formerly worked for Shaw, will be receiving a summary of the tentative agreement for review before the vote to ratify it Monday afternoon.

“Walking a picket line is never easy, but members united like never before in support of each other and, more nobly, in support of the future of each other’s families,” Donna Hokiro, president of the union, wrote.

The deal focuses on Rogers’ commitments to jurisdiction, job security and wages, according to a union statement.

In an emailed statement, Rogers spokesperson Cam Gordon confirmed the tentative agreement.

“We’re pleased that we’ve reached a tentative agreement with the union,” Gordon said. “Our goal has always been to achieve a negotiated settlement that meets the needs of our employees and our customers.”

The union served the company a 72-hour strike notice on Nov. 3 and Rogers responded with a lockout notice to union members for Nov. 6.

The vote to ratify the agreement will take place on Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Metrotown Hilton.

Rogers is the parent company of CityNews.
