SUV crashes into Langley bubble tea restaurant

Despite a car crashing into the side of a bubble tea restaurant in Langley Tuesday afternoon, no injuries have been reported.

It happened at the Bubble on Walnut Grove Drive around 12:45 p.m.

Owner Barry Li says he was inside the restaurant when the SUV crashed, adding “everyone was in shock.”

“There’s an elderly lady and she was trying to pull into the stall … rather than use the brake, she used the accelerator. She went over those … pillars that block people from driving into the store. She basically went over it and hit a motorcycle that was parked in a stall and into our store,” Li told CityNews.

Li says there is some damage to half the front wall of the business, including a large shattered window. But he explains most of it was superficial and “nothing major.”

“It’s not a scene that you see every day, definitely. You only hear it on the news. For a second, because it’s a restaurant right, I thought it was like a stack of plates that fell over because it sounded like continuous glass shattering … but then I looked out and it was shocking,” he said.

The RCMP confirms to CityNews no one — including the 95-year-old driver — was hurt when the vehicle went crashing into the building.

Corp. Zynal Sharoomi says given the circumstances, it looks like this was “a purely unfortunate and accidental incident.”

Meawhile, Li said just before 2:30 p.m. that he had no plans to close for the day — despite the crash and damage.

“Good thing we have a heater, it’s flowing at max right now,” Li joked, noting the draft into the restaurant because of the shattered window.
