Robbery charges laid after man allegedly threatens staff with needle in New West

Police in New Westminster say a man from Langley has been charged with robbery after he allegedly threatened grocery store staff with a needle on Sunday.

The New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) says at about 2 p.m., workers called 911 alleging a man was “stealing merchandise” from the store before he reportedly threatened to stab them with a syringe.

Police say officers found a man matching the description staff members gave of the suspect at Sapperton SkyTrain Station.

“These employees were just trying to do their job,” said Sgt. Justine Thom. “It’s appalling that staff were subjected to this type of abuse and it’s extremely fortunate that no one was seriously injured.”

Forty-one-year-old Shane Murray Stanway has been charged with one count of robbery in relation to the incident, police say.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed what happened and has not yet spoken to police to call 604-525-5411 and reference file 23-19452.
