Charges approved in theft of $10M worth of cryptocurrency, Richmond RCMP says

Mounties say charges have been approved against a suspect after $10 million in cryptocurrency was stolen during a home invasion in north Richmond.

In September 2022, police allege that multiple suspects with weapons forcibly entered into the home, with some suspects impersonating police officers, and a man and a woman who lived in the home were assaulted, bound, and held for many hours.

The suspects fled with the cryptocurrency, along with some luxury items, the RCMP says.

As well, police say the victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

“Our Serious Crimes Unit and Economic Crime Unit have been working on this investigation for over a year,” said Richmond RCMP Chief Supt. Dave Chauhan. “They have done an exceptional job with the investigation, leading to an arrest with many very serious charges, and the recovery of the bulk of the stolen $10 million in cryptocurrency. As well, investigators have provided consistent support to the victims of this heinous act.”

A total of 11 charges have been approved against 34-year-old Jin Da Xing of Richmond, including break and enter to a dwelling, robbery with a weapon, unlawful confinement and assault with a weapon.

The RCMP says Xing remains in custody and is awaiting trial.
