An international organization is calling on the federal government to do more to address femicide in Canada.
Aura Freedom, a grassroots organization that is working to end violence against women and human trafficking in Canada, says rates of femicide have increased post-pandemic, with one woman or girl killed every 48 hours.
This comes as Saturday marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. In a statement, Premier David Eby says this a time for people, organizations, communities, and governments to share how they are taking action to break the cycle of violence and provide safety and support to survivors.
“Today, we join people in B.C. and around the world in calling for an end to gender-based violence and renewing our commitment to supporting survivors,” Eby said.
“Throughout B.C., violence against women, girls, and Two-Spirit, transgender, and gender-diverse people is a deeply troubling and harmful issue. The effects on survivors, their families and communities are devastating.”
