BC SPCA: 44 animals seized from home with ‘carpet of feces’

The BC SPCA says it has seized 37 dogs and five cats who were found in a home off the coast of Vancouver Island described as being “filled with feces, urine, and garbage.”

The dogs that were found were a combination of Havanese, Papillons, poodles and Pomeranian mixes, as well as two Bernadoodles, the organization says. It explains two females and their seven puppies were among the dogs seized, adding the 44 animals were taken to Nanaimo by boat to be cared for at facilities across the island.

Eileen Drever, senior officer protection and stakeholder relations for the BC SPCA, says “you could smell the feces before you entered” the home the animals were taken from.

“When the animal protection officers entered the home, they discovered the main floor was covered in what can only be described as a carpet of feces and there were incredible amounts of garbage in many of the rooms,” she explained.

Drever says animals were found in all parts of the home, “including inside the walls.” She adds there was “no visible food or water for them” and that the “home had no running water at all.”

The dogs and cats are currently being cared for by a veterinarian.

“Their paws were urine stained and they had overgrown nails,” Drever said. She adds manhy of the dogs that have been examined are emaciated and are suffering from dental disease.

Despite their conditions, the dogs are reportedly “doing remarkably well,” Drever says.

Whether the animals will be available for adoption is not yet clear. It’s also unclear whether an owner has been identified and whether any charges will be recommended.
