13-year-old boy and father killed in Richmond double homicide, IHIT says

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) says a 13-year-old boy and his father were killed at their Richmond home Thursday.

Sgt. Timothy Pierotti with IHIT says the boy and his 46-year-old father were discovered by a family member at a home on Goldsmith Road, near the Rocky View Playground and London Sports Fields around 10:30 p.m.

IHIT says early evidence suggests this was a targeted incident and investigators are working to determine a motive.

“We certainly haven’t ruled anything out, but what I can say is nothing is suggesting that this family had anything to do with the B.C. gang conflict,” Pierotti said.

Pierotti says the homicide will likely have a significant impact on the community since it involves a youth.

“We always work closely in partnership with the detachments of jurisdiction. In this situation it’s the Richmond RCMP,” Pierotti says. “We’re going to continue to support them as a community and support their schools.”

Pierotti says there’s no risk to the public at this time, but police will be out more frequently on “proactive patrols.”

“Whether you knew the family, whether you live in Richmond or not, if you’re hearing about this information it’s troubling. Please do seek out the help that you need,” he said.

Pierotti did not confirm if the family is under police protection, but he say the family is being supported by victim services and will continue to be for as long as is needed.

In the meantime, IHIT is looking for any witnesses or video footage from the area.

“We are asking anyone who may have observed anything suspicious in the area of the Rocky View Playground or the adjoining pathways between 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. on Nov. 30 to contact IHIT,” Pierotti said. “Also, if you were driving or parked in the area and have dash-camera footage, please contact IHIT immediately.”

IHIT has not released the names of the victims.
