‘Sudden death’ in Chilliwack prompts RCMP investigation

Mounties in Chilliwack are investigating the “sudden death” of a man downtown.

The RCMP says it received calls about a man in “medical distress” in the area of Yale Road and Spadina Avenue just before 10 p.m. Monday.

The man, who is believed to be between 60 and 70 years old, was taken to the hospital where police say “life savings efforts were unsuccessful and the male was pronounced deceased.”

“The Chilliwack RCMP, we are holding the scene as we conduct our investigation and analyze the scene and ensure we capture all evidence available. Until such time as we’ve determined that we’ve exhausted our investigation at the scene, we’ve cordoned off the area to prevent public access,” explained RCMP Const. Carmen Kiener.

The Serious Crime Unit has since taken over the investigation. However, few details are being shared about what may have happened.

“I’m not able to go into the nature of the male’s injuries as the investigation unfolds — those are not details we’re sharing with the public, or the cause of death, either,” said Kiener.

Investigators say they’re looking for witnesses who were in the area of Main Street and Spadina Avenue on Monday between 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. and who may have seen the man, who is described as having long grey hair, a grey beard, and who was wearing a black and grey jacket and black pants.

The Chilliwack RCMP says it is not releasing the man’s name at this time, until next of kin is notified.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611 and quote file number 2023-50800. You can also make an anonymous report to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
