Fire in Burnaby cloaks Highway 1 in smoke

A fire in Burnaby created smoky conditions for drivers on Highway One, just east of Willingdon, Thursday evening.

Burnaby Fire Department says a blaze in a duplex on Manor Street warranted a two-alarm response. About 30 firefighters attended the scene.

Firefighters arrived on scene around 4:15 p.m. and the fire is now out, Fire Chief Chris Bowcock says.

“On arrival, heavy smoke was showing from four sides,” Bowcock said. “A very rapid search was conducted for life.”

Bowcock adds there are no indications of anyone being inside.
