Hudson’s Hope man handed hunting ban for killing bull moose, fined $10K

A man from a small town in northeastern B.C. has been handed a hunting ban and a $10,000 penalty after illegally killing a bull moose.

B.C.’s Conservation Officer Service (CSO) says Rory Friesen from Hudson’s Hope will be unable to hunt for three years for the unlawful killing and dangerous hunting practices.

In a Facebook post, the CSO says an individual shot a bull moose as it was crossing a road near Dawson Creek in September 2020. Meanwhile, a motorist was driving nearby.

“The motorist, who reported the incident, witnessed the individual injure the moose and then use a firearm to kill the animal as it lay on the side of the road,” it said.

“The motorist, who was in their vehicle in the middle of the road at the time, was fortunately not injured.”

The CSO says Friesen has been sentenced in Dawson Creek Provincial Court for killing the moose during a closed season and “hunting without consideration for the lives and safety of others,” both of which violate the Wildlife Act.

In addition, he is also prohibited from accompanying hunters anywhere in the province for three years.

The service says the majority of the fine will go toward the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, and that it hopes this will act as a deterrent against similar activities in the future.
