Abbotsford police shooting leaves 1 person dead

B.C.’s police watchdog has been called in after a person was shot during an interaction with officers in Abbotsford and died Sunday night.

It happened along Riverside Road, just south of Highway 1, after officers received reports of someone with a weapon “threatening harm” just before 10 p.m.

When officers arrived on scene, police say there was an interaction between them and a “male,” with shots being fired.

“The man sustained gunshot-related injuries and was subsequently pronounced deceased,” the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) explained Monday.

The IIO will now look into the circumstances around what happened.

“The IIO was notified shortly after the incident occurred and initial investigative steps will determine the details of the interaction between the man and police, and whether any police use of force was reasonable, necessary, and proportionate in the circumstances,” the IIO said.

Few other details have been provided, though Abbotsford police say there is no risk to the public.

Riverside Road was closed overnight between Marshall and King roads. It has since reopened.

The IIO is asking anyone with information relevant to its investigation to contact the office at 1-855-446-8477.
