BC Ferries sailings resume after staffing-related delays

British Columbians are already on their way to visit their families and friends across the province and country, and conditions at BC Ferries and YVR are reflecting this surge. Kier Junos reports.

As BC Ferries prepares for a busy holiday weekend, two sailings were already delayed due to staffing issues Friday morning.

The 7:45 a.m. sailing from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen and the 8 a.m. from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay were both delayed by close to an hour, due to missing crew members on each. However, both have since been able to leave.

The Coastal Celebration from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen was able to resume service about 50 minutes behind schedule, while the Queen of New Westminster was able to leave Tsawwassen shortly after, just under 50 minutes late.

Despite the resumptions, Deborah Marshall with BC Ferries says delays are likely to continue on this major route.

“We do have lots of customers travelling for the holidays today so we’re trying to accommodate each and every customer. While the crews and terminal staff will try to make up some time, I would expect some delays throughout the day,” she said Friday.

Regardless, travellers are asked to get to ferry terminals on time.

“We do ask customers to check in at their regular time. We do have to process all of the traffic and make sure we’ve got everything lined up for the particular sailing,” she said.
