B.C.’s Vital Statistics Agency has released a list of the most popular names for babies in 2023, and this year, “Noah” tops the list for the second time in a row.
The top 10 was rounded out by Oliver, Olivia, Theodore, Liam, Jack, Emma, Sophia, and Leo.
Between Jan. 1 and Dec. 18 of this year, 37,650 babies were registered in the province, according to the agency’s preliminary statistics. This is very close to 2022’s figure of 37,801 babies, but almost 15 per cent lower than the 44,073 births seen in 2021 — a year after the pandemic lockdown began.
Most of this year’s top 10 names were also popular in 2022, with only one — Lucas — dropping off the list, being replaced by Ethan.
The agency releases a list of the most popular baby names each year based on birth registrations.
The website has data on all registered baby names beginning in 1922, and allows users to compare names by year and popularity.
