A lockdown that was in place at Abbotsford Regional Hospital Thursday is over.
Abbotsford police say they were called in to help out Correctional Service of Canada staff who had transported several prison inmates to the hospital for treatment just before 5:30 p.m.
“Due to the background of these inmates posing safety concerns, corrections requested some resources of AbbyPD to be in place prior to corrections sending necessary resources to ensure public safety,” police said in an email.
Police say they were only there in a support role, adding once resources that were necessary were put in place, “AbbyPD cleared and was no longer required to provide overt security.”
Initially, no details about the circumstances around injuries were provided. However, later Friday, the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers confirmed to CityNews there had been “a severe security incident that occurred at multiple institutions” involving edged weapons.
