Local mountains open up more terrain thanks to overnight snow

After a fresh blanket of snow fell overnight, skiers in the Sea to Sky region are waking up to the news of local mountains opening up more runs for the first time this season.

In a post to X, Whistler Blackcomb says it received 42 centimetres of snow overnight from Friday to Saturday.

“Given the snowfall we received overnight, and a higher volume of guests on the weekend, expect long wait times today,” it wrote.

“Our teams are doing their very best to open things safely and on time and keep the lines moving as fast as possible.”

At around 9 a.m. Saturday morning, the ski resort posted that its parking lots were nearly full.

Closer to Vancouver, similar snowy conditions are also being reported on the North Shore Mountains.

According to Grouse Mountain’s website, it received 37 cm of snow in the past 24 hours and will be opening its Peak Chair at noon.

New runs opening today on Grouse include Peak, Lower Peak and Heaven’s Sake.

On Mount Seymour, staff report that 32 cm of snow has fallen in the past 24 hours.

Seymour says it will be opening its Goldie Learning Area and Mushroom Terrain Park Saturday.

Finally, Cypress Mountain says its Sky Chair and SkyQuad are set to open Sunday, with the available terrain catering to intermediate to expert levels only.
