Environment Canada issues winter weather statement for Island, South Coast

An incoming winter weather blast has prompted a special weather statement by the Government of Canada’s weather agency.

Beginning Monday morning, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says significant snowfall is likely inland on the central and south coasts, and even at sea level along some of the South Coast and eastern Vancouver Island.

However, the agency says snow will soon transition to heavy rain on Monday afternoon in areas like Metro Vancouver, which are closer to sea level.

ECCC also warns of “very strong winds” in western and southern Vancouver Island on Monday and Tuesday.

West Vancouver Island is expected to be hit with the heaviest rainfall when the rain picks up Monday evening. Higher elevations can expect the intensity of the snowfall to pick up Monday evening as well.

By Tuesday, Environment Canada says the strong winds are expected to reach the inner south coast.

The agency says the system may warrant weather warnings as it nears landfall.
