BC Ferries cancels multiple sailings in anticipation of high winds

BC Ferries has issued a number of cancellations for Monday evening into Tuesday morning, in anticipation of the choppy waters Environment Canada warns are coming to the coast.

The Monday evening 7:10 p.m. sailing from Comox to Powell River and the 8:45 p.m. sailing in the opposite direction have both been cancelled.

The 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. sailings between Tsawassen and Swartz Bay have already been cancelled, and the 7:45 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. sailings between Tsawassen and Duke Point are at risk of being cancelled.

BC Ferries says the cancellations have been made to ensure passenger and crew safety while sailing with high winds in the forecast.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is warning British Columbians to be weary of “significant waves” near some coastal areas Tuesday morning.

The weather agency’s advisory covers the shorelines near Boundary Bay within Metro Vancouver, as well as along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, including Sooke and Victoria, and the Southern Gulf Islands.

ECCC says during high tide, large waves are possible due to “gale-force southwest winds, storm surge, and seasonably high tides.”

“Coastal flooding is possible along exposed shorelines, especially in low-lying areas,” ECCC says in its statement, warning of elevated ocean water levels.
