Coquihalla Highway crash leaves one dead: police

Police in Merritt say one person is dead after a collision between a semi and a pickup truck on the Coquihalla Highway.

BC Emergency Health Services says it received a call about a collision, about 41 kilometres south of Merritt, at around 11:30 a.m. on Monday.

Mounties say a Ford F150 was travelling southbound when it crossed the centre median and began driving into oncoming traffic before striking a semi-truck in the slow lane.

The driver of the F150 died on scene and crews say a passenger was airlifted to hospital. The driver of the semi sustained minor injuries.

Police say the cause of the collision is still under investigation.

“Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased,” said Sgt. Josh Roda. “We want to remind the public to slow down and drive to the conditions this winter. The conditions on the Coquihalla Highway can change quickly.”

Anyone with information about this collision is asked to call the Merritt RCMP at 250-378-4262.
