White Rock Pier closed due to wind

High winds have forced the City of White Rock to temporarily close the pier Tuesday, as cold weather front makes its way across the region.

The city says the White Rock Pier will be closed as “a safety precaution.” No reopening time has been provided.

The closure comes as a wind warning remains in place for the southeren sections of Metro Vancouver, near the water.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says southwesterly gusts off 70 to 90 kilometres per hour are possible throughout the early afternoon Tuesday.

“The winds will fall below warning criteria later this afternoon as the low departs the region,” the agency explained.

It warns losse objects may be thrown around by the wind, and could cause injuries and power outages.

A special weather statement also remains in effect for the shorelines around parts of Metro Vancouver near Boundary Bay, with “significant waves” possible along with “elevated ocean water levels.”

“Large waves due to gale-force southwest winds, storm surge and seasonably high tides have the potential to produce high water levels for today. Coastal flooding is possible along exposed shorelines, especially in low-lying areas,” ECCC said.
