Driving through ‘The Cut’ — the stretch of Highway 1 between Lynn Valley Road and Mountain Highway — can cause big headaches for commuters, and now one North Vancouver district councillor is pushing for a solution.
Coun. Jim Hanson is proposing that the district pave the shoulder, so people who are headed for Mountain Highway can get out faster.
“I looked to my right, and between Lynn Valley Road and Mountain Highway is a section of [the] shoulder — available land that would easily accommodate a lane,” he said at Monday’s council meeting. “I haven’t yet, but I’m tempted just to pull out and drive down to Mountain Highway.”
Hanson’s motion asks the district to report on other potential improvements to reduce congestion through the corridor.
Coun. Lisa Muri says they’re already waiting on a lot of different reports from around the district.
“I think we should dust off the original recommendations,” Muri said. “Look at the low-hanging fruit — paving that shoulder — and see if there’s an opportunity to lengthen that pull out.”
The motion received support from council, with staff to report back at a later date.
Editor’s note: this article has been updated to correct Hanson and Muri are district councillors.
