Truck crashes into Massey Tunnel, RCMP says

The George Massey Tunnel is the latest piece of infrastructure to be hit by a truck.

The Richmond RCMP confirms to CityNews it is “actively investigating” the collision, which happened Wednesday night.

In an update Thursday, Mounties said they had received reports from a person who described seeing the truck “strike the roof of the Massey Tunnel” just after 8 p.m.

“The complainant stated she was driving directly behind the truck when it hit. The truck initially came to a stop inside of the tunnel but after continued driving through,” the RCMP said just after 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

“It has been alleged that after the truck exited the tunnel it pulled over and the driver possibly spoke with an employee from a road maintenance contractor, however, this person has yet to be identified.”

The Richmond RCMP says it has been provided with dashcam footage. It notes, based on an investigation, it believes it has “identified the trailer involved,” and is now working to identify the driver.

Investigators are asking the person who was behind the wheel of the truck to contact police.

“Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit have conduct of this investigation. The investigation remains active and ongoing,” Mounties said.

Earlier this month, a truck carrying an oversized load scraped a Highway 1 overpass in Abbotsford. DriveBC confirmed on Jan. 2 that a wooden crate the truck was transporting “did make contact” with the overpass, though no structural damage was reported.

Prior to that, in late December, a semi hit the 112th Street overpass over Highway 99 in Delta, leaving behind “significant damage.”

There have been over 30 overpass crashes in 24 months.

The Richmond RCMP says anyone with information or who may have seen what happened can contact Mounties at 604-278-1212 and quote file number 2024-1070.
