Lougheed Highway reopens in Burnaby after Thursday crane incident

A busy section of Lougheed Highway reopened both directions late Friday evening after an incident involving a crane at a construction site in Burnaby Thursday had caused it to be shut down.

In an email to CityNews, WorkSafeBC says it was “notified of an incident involving a crane” Thursday afternoon in the area of Lougheed Highway and Gilmore Avenue.

“WorkSafeBC officers attended the scene at approx. 5:30pm on Jan. 25th and stop-use orders were issued for both the tower crane and the derrick,” the email reads.

“To ensure worker, public and overall site safety, a stop-work order was also issued to keep the public road closure in place.”

Images show a piece of the crane on top of a tower under construction hanging off the side of the building.

It’s unclear what caused the crane to fall, but WorkSafeBC says it is investigating.

“The purpose of our investigation is to identify the cause of the incident, including any contributing factors, so that similar incidents can be prevented from happening in the future,” the agency said.

Callers to CityNews Thursday afternoon reported seeing some sort of commotion in the same area, potentially involving a crane at a construction site near Gilmore Station.

In its email Friday, WorkSafe pointed CityNews to “information about [its] initiatives related to crane safety and a summary of the related occupational health and safety requirements” on its website.
