‘Potential deficiency’ found on Steveston Highway overpass; lane closed for structural assessment

The eastbound travel lane on the Steveston Highway crossing over Highway 99 is closed for a structural assessment, B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure announced Wednesday evening.

The closure is the result of a possible issue discovered during an inspection, the ministry says.

“A potential deficiency in one of the support piers was identified following a scheduled engineering inspection, and the eastbound lane has been closed out of caution,” it said. “Ministry staff will further assess the structure to determine next steps.”

As the eastbound lane is closed, traffic will be single-lane alternating on highway crossing over Highway 99 until further notice.

“People using this crossing can expect delays,” the ministry said.

Drivers can use Blundell Road and the Westminster Highway crossings as alternative routes. As well, access to Highway 99 northbound is available at the Alderbridge Way/Highway 91 interchange. Highway 99 southbound can be accessed via the Westminster Highway.

DriveBC says the next update will be Thursday at 5 p.m.
