Metro Vancouver to see spring-like weather this week

By CityNews Staff and The Canadian Press

It looks like the groundhogs were right — Metro Vancouver is in for some early, spring-like weather over the coming days.

It’s still technically winter, but people across the region will know this season has been warmer than usual. Some flowers like snowdrops and crocuses — which normally appear later in the season — have already been seen in bloom in some parts of the region.

CityNews Meteorologist Carl Lam says daytime temperatures over the next few days will hover around the low teens, with even warmer conditions later in the week.

“You can expect some really comfortable conditions across Metro Vancouver as we go through the rest of this week,” he said Monday.

“We’re also keeping track of a little bit of rain that will move through Tuesday night into Wednesday, and linger into early Thursday morning before we’ll start to dry things out.”

Folklorists will know this is in line with what Canada’s famous prognosticating rodents predicted earlier this month. Ontario’s Wiarton Willie, Nova Scotia’s Shubenacadie Sam and Quebec’s Fred la Marmotte all reportedly did not see their shadows which, according to centuries-old lore, means an early spring.

Not every Canadian city will see the same spring-like weather just yet, though. Places like Toronto and Edmonton are still looking at single-digit daytime highs this week, with some overnight lows dipping into the negatives.
