Science World Expo Deck work planned for 2028: Vancouver

The City of Vancouver says plans are underway for the “replacement and rehabilitation” of the Science World Expo Deck — but no work is set to begin for at least another four years.

The city says in a statement to CityNews that a request for proposal was recently sent out outlining the scope of work. The statement explains that “the city anticipates hiring a consultant this year with actual on-site work planned for 2028-2032.”

The Expo Deck surrounds the False-Creek-facing section of Science World, to the north, south, and east of the structure. It was built in 1984 for the 1986 World Expo, with the city saying the structure was meant for “temporary purposes with an anticipated five-year service life.”

However, four decades later, the deck remains. The city explains recent inspections have shown some “structural elements” are nearing the end of their lifespan.

“The City is looking to hire a consultant to prepare a study that will inform our decisions on the next steps, including options to fully or partially remove the deck, or replace the deck. The consultant will also help with next steps for the project, including detailed design and engineering support during future construction phase,” the statement from the city reads.

It notes an alternative pathway will be set up during construction so people will have “continuous waterfront access” via the Seaside Greenway, which starts at the Vancouver Convention Centre, connects at a portion of the seawall around False Creek, and ends at Spanish Banks Park.
