164 new affordable rental homes open in Coquitlam

A new 164-unit affordable home rental development opened in Coquitlam Friday, the provincial government has announced.
Robert Nicklin Place is a six-storey apartment building for low-income families as well as seniors and people living with disabilities.
“Robert Nicklin Place addresses the urgent need for housing in Coquitlam, including low-income homes for vulnerable renters and homes that are rent-geared to income,” said Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon. “These are designed to be the kind of sustainable homes that give people stable and affordable housing in a housing crisis adding 164 much-needed units to the rental housing stock. The people who live in these homes will benefit from a wealth of nearby amenities and be part of a thriving community.”
The province says it will ensure that 16 of the homes will be deep-subsidy units for households with very low incomes, and 36 units will have rent geared to income.
The building, which is located near the city’s Lafarge Lake area, is named after the former CEO of the Affordable Housing Societies, who worked promoting social housing in the province for 27 years. Nicklin died in 2016.
This project is part of a $19 billion housing investment made by the province.
