Large tree downed on Highway 1 in Burnaby

A large tree was downed on Highway 1 which caused delays eastbound through the Burnaby Lake Stretch.

Deputy Chief Chris Bowcock with Burnaby Fire says the tree has now been cleared but the wind is causing other issues in the city.

“It’s definitely getting busy with the wind across Burnaby. Firefighters are still well suited, responding to all incidents,” he said.

He says there is a tree across the wires and a light standard in Canada way and crews are on the scene to safely control that area.

Canada Way is shut down eastbound and one lane westbound. The highway is now clear.

Bowcock says they are expecting a busy night.

“City Burnaby Fire Department of course will respond to all these incidents with assistance and help from city crews, city engineering crews, park crews, BC hydro,” he said.

Bowcock says it’s important to keep a distance from any down trees that have not fully come to the ground.
