‘Suspicious circumstances’ in Surrey fire under investigation

A fire that forced 11 people from their homes in Surrey Sunday is being treated as suspicious.

Firefighters were called to a building along 103 Avenue around 5 p.m. When they arrived, they found smoke and flames coming from the two-storey fourplex building.

“Crews were working to control the fire from spreading beyond the property and investigating inside for any occupants,” Assistant Fire Chief Darren Major explained.

“There are suspicious circumstances and we are working with police as part of the investigation and it will be ongoing.”

No further details about the cause of the fire were provided, but Major says no injuries were reported. He could not share where the fire started inside the building.

Major adds smoke alarms were present and is reminding people to ensure they have these devices in their homes and workplaces.

The Surrey RCMP says anyone with information related to the fire is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 and quote file 24-34172.
