‘Complex shoplifting scheme’ results in charges: Surrey RCMP

The Surrey RCMP says charges have been laid in connection with what it’s calling a “complex shoplifting scheme” in the Lower Mainland.

According to Mounties, an investigation was launched into thefts across the region that spanned six months. During these thefts, suspects were alleged to have used “sophisticated techniques to conceal” stolen items as they were removed from stores.

The items that were taken were of high value, including fragrances and athletic clothing, with the total amount of theft estimated to have cost $53,000.

The Surrey RCMP says its Community Response Unit was able to link thefts in its city to others in Abbotsford and Langley. Two suspects were identified, with police arresting the pair in Langley last month.

“Retail theft is a significant concern to businesses across Canada and specifically in the Lower Mainland,” said Staff Sgt. Nigel Pronger. “The value of the items stolen is a clear reflection of how our businesses are experiencing significant losses at the hands of professional thieves.”

Police say 51-year-old Nicoleta Rusu and 39-year-old Emil Marian Stan, both from Ontario, have since been charged with multiple counts of theft under $5,000, theft over $5,000, and one count each of possession of stolen property over $5,000.
