Surrey council has approved what it is calling the “largest municipal transportation investment” in the city’s history, greenlighting an extension of 72 Avenue.
The project was approved during Monday’s city council meeting. The extension of 72 Avenue from 152 Street to Highway 15 comes with an estimated construction cost of $138 million, the city explains.
The project will include a four-lane road — with two travel lanes in each direction — agricultural ditches, and a 1.5 metre-wide shoulder, with accommodations for both transportation users and the farming community in mind.

“This council recognizes the importance of investing in road upgrades and we have dedicated $300M to upgrading our transportation network over the next four years,” said Mayor Brenda Locke.
“As our population continues to increase, ensuring efficient and reliable travel options will not only support current residents but also accommodate the needs of the projected one million people who are expected to live in Surrey by 2042. Upgrading the road network will boost connectivity, alleviate congestion, enhance safety, and enhance the overall quality of life for all residents.”
The city estimates 37,000 vehicles will use the extension each day, taking pressure off other major routes like 64 Avenue and Highway 10. The City of Surrey says the extension will also benefit drivers from other communities, providing connections to Langley and Maple Ridge.
