The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) says it seized nearly $300,000 worth of drugs and other contraband from the medium-security unit at Mission Institution Sunday.
The CSC says the confiscated items included two smartphones with accessories, methamphetamine, and other assorted drugs. The combined estimated value of these seizures amounts to $298,310, according to the CSC.
Police have been notified and are now investigating how inmates were able to smuggle the items into the prison, the service explained.
“CSC uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions,” Acting Assistant Warden Mike Skalicky said in a statement Tuesday.
“These tools include ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates, and visitors.”
Following the seizures, CSC notes that security has been heightened to prevent contraband coming into the jail.
An anonymous tip line has been set up so people can alert officials of drug use, trafficking, or any other activities that “may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates and staff members” at all federal prisons.
