Radar device stolen, says Coquitlam RCMP

The Coquitlam RCMP says a device meant to help study speeders has been stolen, and police are asking the public for help getting it back.

The Black Cat radar device, which collects traffic data anonymously, was installed on a traffic pole earlier this month on Citadel Drive near Kensington Crescent in Port Coquitlam.

When officers went to retrieve the device on Thursday, they found the locks and mounting mechanism were damaged and the radar was gone.

“The device was installed in response to complaints from the community concerned with speeding in their neighbourhood,” said Staff Sgt. Mark McCutcheon, the detachment’s traffic services commander.

“The device helps us understand the concerns of our communities. The data collected helps us efficiently implement resources at peak times to address unsafe behaviours affecting the safety of our roadways.”

Mounties say the device has no resale value.

Anyone with any information or relevant video is being asked to call the Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550 and quote file number 2024-7185.
