Mounties say an impaired driver who damaged a street sign after driving up onto a sidewalk in View Royal and then leaving the scene has been caught.
The street sign said “Report Impaired Drivers.”
Police say they received a report of a Dodge Ram pickup truck hitting the sign just before 10 p.m. Thursday. A witness said the driver was going at a “high rate of speed” before hitting the sign. By the time an officer got there, the truck had sped away and was last seen heading toward Victoria, six kilometres west of the small town.
The vehicle’s licence plate was left behind.
Victoria Police Department officers located the truck minutes later where they conducted a traffic stop and found the driver to be impaired.
“We want to thank both the witness and Victoria Police Department for acting so quickly,” said Corp. Nancy Saggar, RCMP media relations officer.
“This was a dangerous impaired driver who was taken off the roadway just minutes after the report to police came in.”
