Vancouver landmarks went dark for Earth Hour Saturday evening

BC Place and the Vancouver Convention Centre went dark for Earth Hour, beginning at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

They joined millions of people around the world who went dark for a full 60 minutes, helping highlight climate change around the globe, said United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

“An hour is a global show of solidarity for taking a different path. It demonstrates the power of each of us in the fight for our futures,” Guterres said. “Together, let’s turn off the lights and turn the world towards a brighter future for us all.”

He says the need to do something about our collapsing climate is urgent.

“Last year was the hottest ever,” he said. “Let’s turn off the lights and turn the world towards a brighter future for us all.”

Beginning in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour has spread to more than 180 countries, with tens of millions of people joining in.

Earth Hour takes place March 23 at 8:30 p.m. local time around the globe.
