IIO called in after Coquitlam man found dead during 2nd wellness check

An investigation is underway, after a man was found dead at a home in Coquitlam upon a second wellness check earlier this month.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) says the RCMP received a call to check the well-being of a man at a home in the area of Cottonwood Avenue near North Road around 11:45 a.m. on March 4.

“It is reported that police attended the address but did not speak to the man,” the IIO said in a release Monday.

On March 19, the Coquitlam RCMP received another request to check on the man, who was then found dead inside the home.

The IIO, which is B.C.’s civilian oversight agency of police, was called in after the discovery.

“Initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of the attempted wellness check on March 4 and what role, if any, police actions or inaction may have played in the death,” the IIO explained.

No further details were provided.
