Almost 100 new affordable rental homes are now open in Langley.
The province announced the opening of Jennie Gaglardi Place at 21201 56 Avenue on Tuesday, saying the 98 units will house people with low to moderate incomes.
“These 98 homes will provide affordable, stable places to live for people in Langley, improving their quality of life and helping strengthen community connections,” said Ravi Kahlon, minister of housing.
“We know there is an urgent need for more homes like these and we’re taking action – getting shovels into the ground and people into homes more quickly than ever.”
The building is five storeys, built with a wood frame, and includes a mix of studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom homes. Rent will range from $500 for a studio and $2,450 for three bedrooms.
Owned and operated by the Christian Life Assembly Housing Society, the building’s first tenants are expected to move-in in April.
Once there, residents will also have access to a ground floor amenity room, kitchen, washroom, storage room and laundry room, as well as exterior areas for dining or playing. Parking is also provided.
“In the midst of a housing crisis, homes like these will help ensure people can remain in the communities they know and love,” said Megan Dykeman, parliamentary secretary for community development and non-profits and MLA for Langley East.
Jennie Gaglardi passed away in 1995 after founding the Christian Life Assembly Church in Langley more than 85 years ago. It was revealed that the building would be named after her at a 2022 celebration.
This comes as part of the $19-billion investment the province has made into housing. B.C. says it has about 78,000 homes already delivered or in progress in the province, which includes more than 1,000 in Langley.
