Vancouver fire crews were called to an alleyway off of East Pender Street in Chinatown Monday, after flames erupted behind a restaurant.
The incident forced the closure of Pender between Main and Columbia streets for a few hours.
“A fire was set in a back alley in the back of a restaurant. The fire extended up into the structure between some concealed areas of just different construction materials,” explained Vancouver Fire Rescue Services Capt. Matthew Trudeau.
“It’s pouring outside right now. The fire was set on the outside of the building, which happens in a large number in high frequency in this area.”
He says firefighters were able to contain the fire and were working to confirm that it was completely knocked down at the time of the interview.
“It’s a pretty old building in Chinatown,” Trudeau added.
The restaurant was closed at the time of the fire, he says, adding no injuries were reported.
It’s unclear how bad the damage to the building is. Trudeau did not say which restaurant specifically was affected.
Photos from the scene show several fire trucks in the area.
Drivers can take East Hastings as an alternate route.
