Lane closure in Massey Tunnel planned this weekend

There will be more disruptions at the George Massey Tunnel, with a 24-hour lane closure set for this weekend.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says it needs to shut the southbound slow lane on Highway 99 through the tunnel to allow BC Hydro to make repairs to its equipment.

The closure will be in effect from 9:30 p.m. Saturday to 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

“The closure will allow BC Hydro to permanently repair its equipment within the tunnel. There is no public safety issue. This addresses the temporary repair completed on March 20, 2024, which required an immediate slow-lane closure,” the ministry said Friday.

Officials say drivers should plan for possible delays southbound and are even recommending you find an alternate route during the closure window.

“Drivers are asked to obey signs and traffic-control personnel, and to use caution near roadside workers,” the ministry added.
