Quesnel city council censures mayor

City councillors in Quesnel have voted to censure Mayor Ron Paull.

Councillor Scott Elliott introduced the motion to censure, which passed with unanimous support at Tuesday’s meeting, citing an incident with a book that denies the harms of Canada’s residential school system.

Paull reportedly showed his wife’s copy of the book entitled ‘Grave Error: How the Media Misled Us (and the Truth about Residential Schools)’ to colleagues after a board meeting for the Cariboo Regional District in March.

Elliot says the mayor’s actions jeopardized the city’s relationship with Indigenous communities.

“All the work that we’ve done to rebrand this city has been demolished,” said Elliott.

Paull apologized for “picking the wrong book” to bring to the meeting, saying he “didn’t mean any harm.”

The Mayor is declining interviews at this time.

More to come.
