‘Noteworthy decreases in both property and violent crimes’: DPD

Police say property and violent crime in Delta has decreased in the first quarter of 2024.

The Delta Police Department (DPD) says in a news release, that its ongoing monitoring of crime reporting shows a positive trend in crime rates declining in the first three months of 2024.

In comparison to quarter one of 2023, DPD says commercial break-and-enters have decreased by 23 per cent in quarter one of this year, and residential break-and-enters dropped by 20 per cent. Vehicle theft dropped by 42 per cent, and “theft from vehicle” decreased by 64 per cent.

In comparison to Delta’s three-year average, commercial break and enters dropped by 14 per cent so far this year, residential break and enters by 26 per cent, “theft of vehicle” by 25 per cent and “theft from vehicle” dropped by 61 per cent.

“I am proud of the work our team continues to do in ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. Our community-first policing approach, which prioritizes the needs and expectations of our community, remains at the forefront of our efforts,” Chief Dubord of DPD said.

In terms of ‘violent crime,’ the DPD says there’s been a 25 per cent decrease in assaults compared to quarter one of 2023, and a 9 per cent decrease compared to its three-year average.

Robberies have seen a reduction of 78 per cent in quarter one this year compared to 2023 and 71 per cent in the three-year average.

Other “persons” offences, such as threats and harassment saw a 38 per cent decrease in quarter one compared to last year, and 28 per cent compared to the three-year average.

However, DPD says, that under violent crime, intimate partner violence reported an increase of 19 per cent compared to the three-year average.

It says violent offences involving youth are down by 55 per cent compared to the three-year average.

“These statistics reflect a positive shift in the safety and security of Delta, demonstrating the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to combat crime,” DPD said in the release. “We encourage our community to continue to help us with the goal to reduce crime.”
