‘Let’s go Petey’ chant gains steam ahead of Canucks-Oilers Game 5

Excitement is building in Vancouver ahead of a big Game 5 between the Vancouver Canucks and the Edmonton Oilers.

There are high stakes going into the playoff game at Rogers Arena, as whoever wins will lead the series and force the other team to the brink of elimination.

Fans are rallying behind the team, in particular around a Canucks superstar who hasn’t been playing his best during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Forward Elias Pettersson said it himself while speaking to reporters on Wednesday.

“Obviously I want be better, I want to be the difference maker and it hasn’t gone, obviously, the way I want it to be,” he said.

“I know I can be better and I am trying out there, it’s not going the best way right now.”

A new chant is now trending on social media, started by Sportsnet 650 hosts Mike Halford and Jason Brough.

“Can you imagine the story, if before the game tonight, the chants start, ‘Let’s go Petey’ in the warmup,” said Brough.

“They carry on to the national anthem, right? Only one anthem before you’re hearing ‘Let’s go Petey’ raining out throughout the building.”

Brough compared the chant to one for Philadelphia Phillies player Trea Turner, who was struggling with his game last year. However, once fans started chanting his name, he turned a corner.

Canucks fans took to social media to say they were on board with the Petey chant.

Head Coach Rick Tocchet didn’t call out Petersson when speaking to reporters after Tuesday night’s 3-2 loss in Edmonton, but did said some players need to step it up.

“We need five or six guys to get going here,” Tocchet told reporters after Game 4. “I mean, it’s the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Some guys, I don’t know if they thought it was the playoffs. We can’t play with 12 guys. We’ve got to figure it out quick.”

Game 5 happens at Rogers Arena on Thursday, at 7 p.m. You can catch it on Sportsnet and hear the call on Sportsnet 650.
