BC Ferries busy ahead of ‘unsettled’ long weekend weather

A windy start to Friday hasn’t ended in any weather-related disruptions at BC Ferries, however, it is still busy ahead of the long weekend.

The first two sailings of the day from Tsawwassen to Duke Point were sold out early Friday morning, with sailings to Swartz Bay also filling up quickly.

CityNews meteorologist Michael Kuss explains that if you’re heading to Vancouver Island for the weekend, it’s going to be mostly dry, albeit not warm.

“There’s not a lot of precipitation on the Island over the weekend, but it’s not going to be warm,” he explained. “Temperatures at or below seasonal — 15, 16 degrees will be the maximum daytime highs. The overnight lows, if you’re camping, will be a little chilly.”

“Pack the four-season sleeping bag because it’s going to be down to five to seven degrees for morning lows in a lot of spots.”

Kuss explains if you’re headed north up the Sea-to-Sky to Whistler and its surrounds, it’s also going to be cool — but also showery at some points.\

“A fall-like feel in Whistler with daytime highs, on Saturday especially, only up around eight or nine degrees and showers in the forecast,” he explained.

“The overnight lows are still going to be down there, at three, four degrees. The best day does look like Sunday in Whistler where it should be dry and at least in the teens. Possible showers returning on Monday,” Kuss added.

And if you’re headed toward the Interior, it’s going to be cool and unsettled to kick off the long weekend, Kuss says.

“In the southern Interior, temperatures will be in the low teens. There’s a chance for showers, with possible thunderstorms even this afternoon,” he said.

“Saturday’s a grey day, a damp one, but it comes around Sunday and Monday with more and more sun and temperatures creeping up into the upper teens.

“Not as warm as last weekend where we had the 30s, but still getting toward seasonal.”
