Man arrested in East Vancouver bus fight

Vancouver police have arrested one man after violence broke out on a bus Tuesday evening.

Police responded to reports of an altercation on a bus that stopped at Commercial Drive and East 11th Avenue around 5:30 p.m.

Const. Amanda Steed with the Metro Vancouver Transit Police says another person was taken to a hospital due to their injuries.

“They were conscious, they were breathing, they were talking, they were able to speak with our officers when they arrived on scene,” said Steed, adding that the injuries were not life-threatening and no weapons were involved.

She says assault charges are being recommended against the arrested man. The reason for the fight is still under investigation.

A witness who was travelling on this bus at the time of the incident tells CityNews that it was “more than an altercation.”

“The man attacked several people,” they said in a written statement. “[The man] beat [another] man with an umbrella.”

The witness says the person assaulted two people in the back of the bus, and others in the front of the bus. They say that some bystanders were also trying to help during the incident.

“This man also stopped several people from leaving the bus and shouted profanity for a good 10 minutes before the bus driver pulled over,” the witness said.
