Nanaimo cemetery’s bronze vases stolen from graves, Mounties say

The Nanaimo RCMP is warning the public about a rash of thefts from grave sites at a local cemetery.

Between May 12 and May 17, approximately 12-14 bronze vases were stolen from Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, police say.

“These thefts are extremely disturbing,” said Const. Gary O’Brien.

“First and foremost, the families who purchased the vases then placed them next to their loved ones are simply outraged that someone would resort to stealing something as personal as this. Also, there is really no commercial value for bronze so overall, it just doesn’t any sense at all.”

The vases are between 9 and 12 inches tall and each weigh around two pounds. Police say the vases are purchased by family members who fill them with flowers or other items and leave them beside the graves.

No suspects have been identified.

Police are asking anyone who may have information about the thefts to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
